THE PROJECT

1.This project may be done as a paper project. Include a binder or duotang. You must have a bibliography to record where you get your information from.

2.Make a web site for the project. You may use Google Sites or another web page maker as long as I have free access to your work. If you borrow pictures, movie clips or anything else from other websites be sure to give credit to that website and/or get permission to use the pictures, movies and multimedia. You may include links to further information.

Scientific literacy is part of national science education curricula worldwide. In this volume, an international group of distinguished scholars offer new ways to look at the key ideas and practices associated with promoting scientific literacy in schools and higher education. The goal is to open up the debate on scientific literacy, particularly around the tension between theoretical. Exploration of the Universe

Project Grade 9

Layered Curriculum Version

This project is to be done during class every second Friday, at home, on days when your teacher is not in class and when ever you complete assignments early. All of the C level must be done, one of the B level assignments and one of the A level assignments. Some of the project is research and some is lab activities (night viewing). Follow the directions and be sure to follow the links to attachments. Some will be explained in class but if you have problems with the package see your teacher after school for help. That is your responsibility. The project will be due _____June____ 2012.

Introduction write an introduction describing the project.

1C Define the following terms. You should also find pictures or diagrams and examples. An astronomical unit, a light year, planet, moon, star, asteroid, comet, solar system, galaxy, nebulae, and black hole.

2C Choose one of the following:( a or b)

a)Explain the phases of the moon. How are they formed? What are they called?

b)Graph sun rise and sunset data for one month. Make observations and conclusion statements.

2A.Choose one of the options (a or b)

a)Record the phases of the moon for one month, draw the phase as you observe it. Record the time and height above the horizon using the astrolabe.

i) Make an astrolabe. Handout appendix 4.3. We will make this in class and learn to use it.

ii) Choose a spot you can use for your observations. Draw a diagram.

iii) View the moon as often as you can in a one month period. Use the astrolabe to measure the distance above the horizon and time of night. Make a chart to show your observations.

b) Record and observe changes in the position of the brightest points of light in the sky over a period of time. Use an astrolabe to chart the changes.

3C. What our ancestors saw, before the telescope people observed the night sky. Draw pictures of at least three constellations. Define the word constellation.

3B Choose any culture and discuss the origin of the universe from their perspective. 250 words.

3B Retell a legend of how the stars got there or why they are in that shape from any cultures point of view.

3A. Free junk cleaner for mac. Try to find constellations yourself in the night sky. Draw what you see or if you have a camera that has a night mode take pictures. Record data over several hours of night viewing and write about things that stay the same and things that change from night to night.

4C Draw the Earth Centered Model of the Solar System from page 435 or get a picture. What was the Earth centered model of the solar system? Who invented and supported that model? What problems did it have when trying to explain movement of the planets and stars?

4B The church in Europe supported that model. Why?

4A Make a model or animation that shows the movement of the planets around the Earth. Look at some historical models for inspiration.

5C. Draw the Sun Centered Model (Heliocentric) of the solar system from page 436 or get a picture. What is the sun centered model? Who first invented this and supported this model?

5B Research the persecution of Galileo, Copernicus, Tycho Brahe by the church for trying to put forward the sun centered model.

5A Make a model or animation that shows the movement of the planets around the sun.

7C Stars have a life cycle or development cycle. Copy the diagram of the different kinds and stages of the life of a star. Below the diagram define the different kinds of stars p 467-8 in the text or a picture from the internet. Explain what your picture or diagram is actually showing.

7B Recently a star was actually caught in the act of going super nova. Find several articles about stars and galaxies and summarize them.

8C What is a galaxy? Pages 497 to 502 and the internet. What shapes do they come in? What galaxy is our solar system in? What is the Andromeda Galaxy?

8A Research the number of known galaxy’s there are and if you can print a picture of some from the internet. Go to the Hubble site on the internet and share the discoveries being made at present by that satellite.

9C What is the International Space Station? Who built it and what is its purpose? What is Canada’s contribution. Include a labeled diagram.

Mac system requirements for adobe incopy leasing?. 9B Research what kinds of research is being done on the space station.

9B What is the future of the Space Station? Research and share your findings.

10CAttempt to describe the vast distances between planets and stars? Use astronomical units and light years. Java for mac 10.7.5.

10B Research the size of our solar system, the size of the Milkyway galaxy, and the size of the known Universe. Create a diagram that compares these sizes. Explain your diagram or poster.
